I don't understand what my history text is trying to tell me?

United Fruit refused to accept the monetary value that Arbenz wanted to buy their land for. In other words, United Fruit was tweaking some numbers to benefit them for tax purposes. Later, when they had to sell their land, they didn't want to sell for the "value" that they had declared for tax purposes because it was in fact worth more than this.
